Introduction to Ayurveda and the Tridosha Theory
Ayurveda is an ancient holistic healing system from India, over 5,000 years old. The word comes from Sanskrit: Ayus (life) and Veda (knowledge), meaning “the science of life.” Ayurveda focuses on maintaining health through balance in body, mind, and spirit using natural therapies, diet, lifestyle, and massage.
A key concept in Ayurveda is Prakriti, an individual’s unique constitution determined at birth. It is based on the balance of the three Doshas—biological energies that govern physical and mental functions.
The Three Doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha
Vata (Air + Ether)
Governs movement, circulation, and the nervous system
Traits: Energetic, creative, slim, but prone to anxiety and dryness.
Imbalances: Stress, insomnia, bloating, constipation.
Pitta (Fire + Water)
Governs metabolism, digestion, and transformation.
Traits: Medium build, intelligent, ambitious, with strong digestion, but prone to irritation.
Imbalances: Inflammation, acidity, skin rashes, impatience
Kapha (Water + Earth)
Governs structure, stability, and immunity
Traits: Sturdy, calm, loving, strong endurance, but prone to sluggishness and weight gain.
Imbalances: Lethargy, congestion, water retention.
The Importance of Balance
Health is achieved when the Doshas are in balance. When imbalanced, they cause discomfort or illness. Ayurveda restores harmony through diet, massage, cleansing practices (Panchakarma), yoga, meditation, and herbal remedies.
Ayurvedic treatments are performed on a massage table, using warm medicinal oils tailored to your needs. For your comfort, please avoid eating for at least one hour before the session. This helps the body receive the massage more deeply and enhances the overall benefits.
